We Cendy, Dana, and I) arrived on St. Thomas in 1996 soon after the passing of Hurricane Marilyn. The storm had devastated all three of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, St. Croix, & St. John. The damage was, of course a huge, on-going story in the Islands and repair and recovery was at the forefront. But a second story vied for equal space .... that was the rampant looting and destruction of property that took place in the wake of the storm. Ordinary, everyday citizens were witnessed taking part in the looting of unprotected stores. But more importantly, a state senator from St. Croix was seen looting a store in a shopping center on that Island and even photographed by a newspaper photographer carrying a TV out to his vehicle. As I recall, he pulled strings with the court and was never prosecuted. The same senator later got the charges dropped for shooting his own son in the back & killing him. The prosecutor said it was self defense and dismissed with prejudice meaning they could never be re-filed. Crooks protecting crooks. Sounds all too familiar.
