We Hold Our Children But for a Moment This weekend is a metaphor for all of parenthood. This afternoon I picked my younger son, Jordan, up from LAX. He has spent the past four weeks studying and visiting in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Hes finally home. I kissed him, I hugged him. Well, okay we punched and wrestled, but it was all the same to me. I got to hold my son. But just for a moment. Just for a moment for you see hes gone now. Hes visiting a friend. But hell be back. But just for a moment. On Monday evening, we will take him to the airport. He will embark on a 10 month service (missionary) trip to Bolivia to work in an orphanage there. Familia Feliz seems to be run by wonderfully dedicated people, and I am looking forward to the experience that he will have there. As I watch my friends send their children off to college for the first time, I am reminded that our role as parents has never been to chain our children down. Our role is to provide a firm foundation from which they can launch into the world. So on Monday, I will release my Jordan to the Lord, yet again. Just as I release his brother David Ryan years ago when he went Haiti after the earthquake. I will trust that God has a plan for his life. And will rejoice that he is off in pursuit of that plan. So Hilma, Conchita, Laurence, Daina, Robert, as you release your first borns into the world, please do so in the firm assurance of three things. You have done an amazing job in raising your children. They were not given to you to hold forever. The same Jesus who sustained you for the past 18 years, will sustain your sons and daughters in the years to come. Amen?
