We all know the incident that has caused some controversy: did our Sheriff Rex W. Coffeyand his Department conduct themselves correctly in an incident almost 6 months ago OR did the States Attny Tony Covington act in a way that let a DUI driver off the hook? In a case last year in California Maryland there seems to be case similair but the Asst States Attny prosecuted: You decide.... LAST YEAR: As reported by somdnews, a Maryland man was sentenced to spend one year in jail after recently pleading guilty to a charge of driving under the influence (DUI) that was leveled after a police chase. Additionally, the man is serving a three-year prison sentence for a previous burglary conviction and must pay $7,200 in restitution to the owner of the vehicle he crashed at the end of the chase. The incident occurred on March 22 when Maryland State Police Trooper Michael Moore was driving his Chevrolet Tahoe through the community of California, Maryland on his way to work when a 2010 model Toyota Corolla allegedly passed the trooper’s vehicle, almost striking it. The Corolla continued to travel at a high rate of speed north along Route 4 and across the Governor Thomas Johnson Memorial Bridge. The driver’s rate of speed was estimated at 110 miles per hour. According to Daniel White, St. Mary’s County Assistant State’s Attorney, the Toyota was passing all the traffic on the bridge over the Patuxent River as the driver continued into Calvert County. Legal documents allege he then turned from Route 4 in Lusby to continue onto Rousby Hall Road while retaining speeds at 110 miles per hour. He blew out the Toyota’s left tire against a curb, but the vehicle reportedly did not stop and continued back to Route 4 on the rim. The driver finally had to stop the car as the result of hitting the curb and flattening the tire. He allegedly got out of the car and ran from the scene, but was chased down in the woods nearby and caught. The driver was allegedly too combative for a roadside sobriety test to be conducted. He was charged with DUI and attempting to evade a police officer, but it was discovered that other charges were outstanding. He was allegedly in violation for his probation in an earlier St. Mary’s County burglary case.
