We all love liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But at a certain juncture I believe society reaches a point of diminishing return. We cant have liberty and freedom just for the sake of liberty and freedom. We end up with a society where every truth is tempted to expand until it becomes a falsehood. Every virtue becomes a vice when practiced in excess, and nothing fails like excess. We find ourselves in a situation where liberty has run its course from stimulus to disorder, from offering benefits to creating chaos and disorder. We stressed freedom of thought , speech and press until we melted down our stabilizing customs, traditions, and beliefs. Our science has become mesmerized by its own mechanisms. We turned biology from a life science into the study of chemistry and physics and lost the wonder and miracle that is life. We divorced Philosophy from the supernatural, and discovered instead of a hopeful vision a world view of enervating skepticism and hopeless cynicism, that ultimately leads nowhere. Education has surrendered to the student. We structure our courses to most importantly stress how they make the student feel, with no regard to absolutes outside of the student themselves. This curriculum has led our youth to an enfeebling isolation from the realities and responsibilities of life! Teachers were forced to give up training character, and instead were compelled to devote their efforts to equipping the unmoral intellect with all the armory of science. We have taught or young to be individualists, but we have removed (and allow legal authorities and courts to ensure its removal) any mention of a higher authority that might compel individuals to strive for or obey any mandate other than that which arises from their own appetite. Denial is a bigger sin than any infraction practiced on our fellow travelers through this world. For anything the emancipated intellect cannot understand is deemed false. Ideas seem to be respected in reverse proportion to their age. Now we have 18 year olds sitting in judgement on societal institutions and codes of conduct which had been generated by the experience of thousands of years, trusting instead the power of their 18 year old reason to reject the family as tyranny, marriage as bondage, and religion as opium. This is not the property or legacy of any political party. This is what we as a society have arrived at. We all own this. The endless headlines of school shootings, bombings, and other violence so rarely seen in our past will only become more and more common unless we ALL finally agree to return the foundations of our educational institutions to their roots and begin teaching good character and morals based on truth.
