We are beginning a new awards program. Here is a press release on the topic issued today: County Homeland Security – Emergency Management Announces Community Hero Awards Do you know of anyone that deserves to be recognized for their strong safety concerns or heroic act that saved a life in St. Clair County? This year, St. Clair County Homeland Security - Emergency Management is launching the Community Hero Awards. HSEM Director, Jeff Friedland states “real heroes come from all walks of life and in all shapes and sizes. Heroes, are people who save lives through advanced planning or decisive and fast action when an emergency situation occurs,” he said. They are our neighbors, teachers, workers and even total strangers but they all share the traits of selflessness and courage. Throughout the year HSEM will call for nominations for the awards which will be presented in two categories – Community and Service. The nominations will be updated monthly. The Community category is open to members of the public and the Service category is for all Emergency Response and Support Personnel for actions occurring in St. Clair County. It has been recognized that the involvement of members of the community can often assist in the prevention of death or serious injury and the awards will acknowledge these individuals. Friedland states, “Every day, members of the community, our emergency service members, and volunteers go above and beyond to deliver critical actions, preventing death and serious injury to those around them,” It is important to recognize that these people are the true heroes of our communities and wish to acknowledge their actions through the presentation of Community Hero Awards. The winners will be recognized for an act deemed by the judging panel to be selfless, courageous and which provided a significant benefit to a member(s) of the community being aided through emergency actions or safety planning. To be eligible for the awards, the acts must be carried out during the calendar year of 2014. A selection panel will review all the nominations on a monthly basis for both the Community and Service categories. Each month a top nominee will be chosen and highlighted on our Facebook page. To determine the annual Community Hero in each category, the top nominees, with a description of why they were nominated, will be placed on the bereadystclair.org webpage and Facebook for public voting. This vote will account for 50% of the overall scoring. A judging panel made up of representatives from media, emergency response network and the community will assess the nominations and the overall awards will be announced at the annual Emergency Services Breakfast in May. Nomination form and entry criteria are available from bereadystclair.org by clicking on the Community Hero Award link on the home page.
