We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of a beloved visionary artist, Leonard Knight, creator of the landmark Salvation Mountain in the Imperial Valley Desert of California. Knight passed away Monday, February 10, 2014, at age 82, in a hospital in San Diego County where he had spent his last two years. Knight’s monumental creation, the 50 foot tall Salvation Mountain was constructed by hand with adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of donated paint. For three decades, he lived alone in an old painted truck at the foot of his creation, sometimes working at night to avoid the scorching desert heat.
