We are excited to be Celebrating Agriculture! Read further for new events this year: Celebrating Local Agriculture Day Sunday August 17, 2014 County Fairs were originally devote to local farmers bringing their best livestock, vegetables and flowers to compete for bragging rights, sell or trade livestock and produce, learn how to improve their farming practices, but most importantly to celebrate with one another. This year the Union Fair would like to celebrate our deep agricultural roots within the community with our local farmers and those who have a passion for local agriculture. We have a full day of activities planned that will be sure to be fun for the entire family. • Used Farm & Garden Equipment Auction – Do you have any used farm or garden equipment that you would like to get rid of? Are you looking for something for your farm or garden? Well make sure you consign your items and be there early to get a good look at what will be up for auction at this year’s fair. Drop off times and locations will be noted on our web site. Auctions are a great fast paced event that is always entertaining and a great place to pick up a bargain. The auction will begin promptly at 10 AM. • Know Your Local Farmer – Do you buy locally? Well this will give you a chance to catch up with your local farmers or meet some new ones. We will have a Farmers Market set up throughout the fairgrounds giving you a chance to buy locally grown products and produce that supports your local community. The market will be set up from 2:00 to 5:00 PM. • Sheep Herding Demonstration: Have you ever wondered why Border Collies are so good at herding sheep? We will have three sheep herding demonstrations during the day so make sure you check it out and watch the dogs work the sheep. It is amazing to see how the dogs work with their shepherd to work the sheep on the farm. Make sure you plan your day to see one of the demonstrations that will be at 1:00 PM, 3:30 PM and 6:00 PM in our outside show ring. If you run out of time or really enjoyed seeing them, you can see them again at the fair on Friday. • Kids Barnyard Games: Have you ever participated in an egg toss? Well, we will give you the chance if you have not had the opportunity. We will be having some fun family barnyard games in to compete in for your own bragging rights. The games will begin at 2 PM, so make sure you sign up early in our show ring. • Open and Youth Poultry Show: Have you ever been amazed at all the different breeds of poultry? Our open and youth poultry show will be taking place in the Poultry Barn at 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM respectively. Make sure you stop by to see who will be this year’s grand champion and vote for your favorite bird. • Youth Market Steer and Lamb Show and Auction: Do you want to buy some locally produced lamb or beef? This year we are excited to offer our young farmers a chance to raise a market steer or lamb that will be sold at auction on Monday at 7:00 PM. But first, they must compete to determine who our grand champions will be. This is a perfect opportunity for you to buy some locally raised beef or lamb and support our future farmers. We will have a local butcher help you have it prepared the way you want. The show will start at 4:00 PM in our show ring. This will give you an opportunity to see the animals and speak with the kids. In addition to these events you can also walk through our livestock barns and displays getting a chance to see the animals and learn about the different breeds and what they are used for. Make sure you also stop by the Exhibit Hall and see the vegetables displays grown by local home gardeners and farmers. If you have any question regarding any of these events, please contact Bruce Reinemann at (207) 785-2978. Plan on spending the day enjoying and celebrating with us!
