We are grateful for the help of the citizens of Cumberland County for helping us to arrest this perpetrator of an armed robbery August 4, 2014. We have arrested a man suspected of robbing the Family Dollar Store at gunpoint. 42-year old Luther James Waddell of 331 Ingram Street, Fayetteville is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon. Surveillance video obtained by Sheriffs Deputies shows that on Monday, August 4, 2014, at around 9:36 p.m. Waddell entered the Family Dollar Store at 3734 Cumberland Road. The video also shows Waddell approaching the store manager, who reported that Waddell asked to purchase blunt wraps. Waddell produced and pointed a long barreled handgun at the employee and demanded that she open the cash register drawer. Waddell picked up the register tray, took the cash from inside it, and fled the scene on foot toward Ireland Drive. The Sheriffs Office began circulating photos from the surveillance video and looking for information that would lead them to the person responsible for this crime. Tips received from the public via Crimestoppers eventually led investigators to Waddell. The assistance of the Crimestoppers organization and the use of the Sheriffs Office Crimestoppers line played a significant role in catching this suspect. I do thank those who helped solve this crime and for working with law enforcement officers to make Cumberland a safer county in which to live. This shows what our good working relationship between law enforcement and the good, honest citizens of our county does and will continue to do.
