We are home! We are heading to the clinic early tomorrow morning for more platelets and hopefully hell be feeling even better than today. Henrys immune system was in overdrive knowing the platelets he was given were foreign to his body, then destroying them within hours. Tomorrows transfusion will be platelets with a matching protein his body would naturally make and so we hope to trick his body into believing they are his own. Over the past few days Henry was given a steroid to calm his immune system before platelets and they seemed to survive a little bit longer, but tomorrows dose should bring him up to a normal level. However, with all hes been through in the past two weeks, Henrys immune system went from overdrive to almost nonexistent. Henry is in the neutropenic zone for up to two weeks. We plan on hunkering down at home and not going anywhere but to the clinic. Unfortunately, we cannot have any visitors for the next two weeks during this cold and flu season. The good news, the BEST news is maintenance is only TWO WEEKS from today! This phase lasts for two and a half years were clinic treatments will be less frequent with fewer side effects and more at home medications. We know its not all smooth sailing but life will become more and more normal as time goes on. This is a major milestone in Henrys treatment and a cause for celebration!
