We are living in a very small world Since the advent of the internet, our world has become much smaller.. I told this story in another site some time ago but it is personal enough to me to tell it again. Back in 1963 I was in grade 9 and doing very well in school.. Sometime in early June of that year, a few of us got into a boat on a beautiful Sunday afternoon and went to Margaree.. After walking around the town we headed back to Isle aux Morts.. I dodnt know what I did but sometime on the way back I fealt the most atrocious pain in my left hip.. I had to get help out of the boat and up to our house where I went to bed.. The next day dad took me to the hospital in Port aux Basques where I was admitted.. As it happens, I missed the provincial exams that year .. Got home from hospital in early July and was not improving so my doctor decided that I would go to the West Coast Sanitorium in Corner Brook for tests and to rule out TB in my back.. That experience in that hospital was a story in and of itself but that is not this story. While I was a patient there, I was in a room with 3 other fellows, all of whom were fantastic men but were not my age.. I was not allowed out of bed for 6 weeks so I did not have much of a chance to visit other rooms to see who the other patients were.. One day a young fellow, close to my age came into my room and said hello to me.. We became very close but I doubt that either of us knew the others names.. I knew he was from down that coast and he knew I was from Isle aux Mortes.. During our stay in the hospital we would watch some tv together but I remember the hours and hours that we played cribbage to pass the time. I could beat him at Cribbage lol We even tried to get some learning in there but neither of us liked the teacher so we were not very interested in that lol. Around mid-September he got released from the hospital and I had to stay for another couple of weeks.. I never heard tell of him again, Sometime in 2003 I was on the internet in a site with a message board.. A sweet young lady from Stephenville Crossing made a thread asking if any of the members were patients in the old West Coast San, a certain year. It was not the year that I was there but I mentioned that I was indeed there in 1963 for several months.. I had not made the post more than a couple minutes when I got a private message from a fellow that I had been communicating with in that site for a couple years.. His message went something like this Wilf, back in 1963 I was also a patient at the West Coast San and there was a young fellow there ( we were all young then ) that was from Isle aux Morts ..I dont suppose it was you After all these years I finally met my cribbage partner from back in 1963.. Even though we chatted several times in that site, neither of us had a clue who the other was. Cecil Wilcott has become a very good cyber buddy.. He is from down in one of the bays and now living in Nova scotia.. We never met personally since 1963 but the internet has put us back together as friends.. Silent Cecil never says much but the things that he says makes sense lol.
