We are making plans for a few necessary renovations for the Burnsville One-Room Color School as well as exciting news that group tours are being planned that will include a stop at the school for a presentation, lunch and then on to the Tishomingo County Archives & History Museum (old courthouse) for another presentation with tour ending with a stop at the Oak Grove Cemetery to visit the memorial/burials of David Hubbard, founder of Iuka and Governor John Marshall Stone. SO now we are asking for any donations or labor time anyone can provide with the repairs of the school. We totally operate by charity and to make this happen we need your help. Call 662-205-3144 and key in for your stop# 103 (On-Cell Service) to hear a lot of history about the school. Anyone wanting to help can contact me- (Opal) or call the museum at 662-423-3500. Burnsvilles one-room school museum, affectionately known as the Burnsville Colored School, was restored by the Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society (TCHGS) in 2011. Due to lack of funding and public support, the School has not yet been open routinely for public use, explains TCHGS President, Cindy Nelson. We want to open on Saturday to give citizens the opportunity to see what an asset the School is to the town of Burnsville, Tishomingo County, and the State of Mississippi. This one-room structure was built in the early 1900s in response to an appeal from the town’s African American community for adequate facilities for the instruction of their children. It was constructed to replace an earlier school building built in the 1800s that was located approximately one mile away near the railroad. The little school house still stands today and is a source of pride in Burnsville’s heritage.
