We are not all equally talanted at spelling or sports or making friends or math, but I think it is of key importance for full development of the mind and personality to struggle against these different methods and disciplines. To turn math class into more of an art lesson where numbers are "explored" is doing a disservice to the child in so much as they are not being exposed to the logic and efficiency of the standard algorithms.
