We are penetrating Copperbelt-Boosts UPND The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) says it is delighted with its victory in Solwezi and Kafulafuta in last week’s parliamentary by elections. UPND Deputy Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, also says the victory is a sign that the party is penetrating on the Copperbelt. Mweetwa told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka on Sunday July 28,2013 that it is only the UPND which has solutions for many problems which have engulfed the nation. “UPND is the next government, come 2016.Watch the party’s growing with keen interest. The UPND is the party to reckon with,” Mweetwa said. He boasted that the party is even going to humiliate other parties during the coming Mkaika, Mulobezi, Petauke and Malambo by elections slated for September 20, 2013. And Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Deputy National Secretary, Chembe Nyangu, says his party is happy with its victory in Chipata Central.Mr Nyangu says people have now refused to be cheated, adding that this time all what the electorates want is development in the nation. He told ZANIS that the politicians should not cheat themselves that MMD will even lose the fourth coming by elections in Eastern and Western Provinces. He added that the MMD has put up a unique campaign formula ahead of the future elections to defend their seats in Mkaika, Malambo and Petauke by elections. On Thursday’s by elections, MMD’s Mtolo Phiri retained the Chipata Central seat after amassing 8186 votes, beating his closest rival Lameck Mangani of the PF who received 5913 votes. The UPND broke new ground on the Copperbelt, scooping the Kafulafuta seat and penetrated North-western Province by winning the Solwezi East seat.Its candidate, Brian Chitafu in Kafulafuta, polled 2,504 and was closely followed by ruling PF’s James Chishiba with 2,407 while NAREP’s Jimmy Kasabwa managed 329 votes.MMD’s Evelyn Mwanawasa who had withdrawn from the election on account of poor health still managed 32 votes. In Mkushi North, PF’s Ingrid Mpande scooped the seat after beating both UPND and MMD rivals with large margins. In Solwezi East, opposition UPND scooped the seat with Mr Lombanya getting 3,127 votes while the PF candidate, Peter Ilunga massing 1,474 votes.
