We are reposting this letter from Ryan Matheis of Jeffersonville Originally printed in the Indy Star: Im writing in the interests of our state public education system, or the dismantling of it over the past six years. I would appreciate your support in the upcoming battle against those who wish to remove State Superintendent Glenda Ritz from her seat as chair of the State Board of Education. The argument made by the governor and leading representatives who have authored Senate Bills 1, 452 and 453 speak of the dysfunction within the board; however, they have minimal concern that Ritz represents the only check on appointed bureaucrats. Education has been a truly demoralizing environment as the state continually levies more responsibilities and accountability while at the same time treating educators as second-class professionals. The schools across our state represent one of the only bastions of employment for educated men and women in the rural communities across Indiana. The inspiration to join this profession has waned tremendously as it is perceived more and more as a customer service position than an occupation that instills discipline, inspiration and a work ethic among students. Since the Tony Bennett era, being an educator has evolved into how happy you can keep parents and students since the exiting of any students has districts scared to death of losing any more precious funding that the state holds over school corporations heads like an abusive big brother. It seems a mystery that despite Bennetts indiscretions we continue following his playbook of privatization, funding that forces benefits to continue to dwindle and ingratitude toward the largest professional workforce in the state that is charged with the states biggest responsibility.
