We are sad to announce that the bald eagle rescued from Hosmer - TopicsExpress

We are sad to announce that the bald eagle rescued from Hosmer Lake on Saturday was humanely euthanized. This eagle was brought to the Sunriver Nature Center for examination and immediate medical care. After being wrapped up in a branch, the left wing suffered a break in the humerus just above the elbow. The elbow was stiff, damaged, and infected. The bird weighed 6.5lbs at intake - extremely light for a bird this size (typically between 10.5lbs - 14lbs). It was emaciated, weak and depressed. Given its condition and the slim likelihood of a successful recovery and release our veterinarian made the choice to euthanize this beautiful bird. Thank you to Steve and his wife, USFS employees who spotted the bird early Saturday morning. It is people like you who give these injured animals a second chance at life. Sometimes the outcome is sad, but necessary and other times the outcome is so sweet. We encourage anyone who finds an injured animal to call the Nature Center as soon as possible. Quick and proper action saves lives. Dont hesitate to call 541-593-4394 and thank you everyone who showed support for this gorgeous bird.
