This session will be an overview of the START model started by Dr. Beasley in 1989 in Massachusetts to provide service supports, clinical, emergency and respite services to individuals with developmental disabilities and behavioral (mental) health needs and their families. Session #2-Overview of Common Genetic Syndromes and the Neurologic, Medical & Psychiatric Issues in IDD This session is an introduction to clinical management issues faced by individuals IDD with medical, neurological, genetic and mental disorders. A particular focus is on deconstructing the artificial boundaries between so-called organic and functional psychiatric illness. To do so, we will rely upon 3 examples: the relationships between epilepsy and anxiety disorders; neuroendocrine abnormalities and mood disorders and one genetic syndrome, Velocardiofacial syndrome, and psychotic disorders. Using these examples, we will look ahead to new ideas that are on the horizon. Session #3-Trauma Informed Behavioral Interventions This session will explore the roots of trauma in the lives of individuals with Intellectual disabilities, the effects of that trauma in both a biological and psychiatric context and the key to recover. Recovery will be discussed in both programmatic and therapeutic terms and case studies will be shared. Sunnyside Up: Mental Wellness and Positive Psychology for People with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities Many efforts in behavior support and treatment for people with IDD have focused on problem behaviors and various challenges. This session will draw from Positive Psychology and Positive Behavior Support to offer a wellness-centered approach. Behavioral and psychological interaction will be presented as a unified set of strength-based strategies.
