We are very pleased to bring you Jean-Philippe Castellanis new exhibition! The exhibition is called “Ethiopia” and covers a recent trip to there to try and find out how Ethiopians live and what parallels could be drawn between their lives and ours. Selecting just 12 proved almost impossible but in the end Castellani did brilliantly. The photographs reveal a changing environment but also unique cultural references infused with small parts of the modern world. We are taken by the hand and shown a glimpse of this extremely complex country. Note the interaction in the streets, the camaraderie amongst the young, the curious juxtapositions and the intersection of different worlds (see the photograph called “Two worlds”). There is a strong element of work too, the photograph of the man on top of a huge pile of potatoes, the woman selling produce in the street all get the message across very well. We also note though the normal games that children play. Something we don’t see in the West so much now. Foosball, table tennis – no Playstations or Xboxes here but when you see the enjoyment, you wonder if they are even necessary. These Ethiopian children are playing games not alone in the dark but outside in the light, with each other. Castellani is a gifted storyteller and we really enjoyed his insight, channeled wonderfully through the lens of his camera.
