We are very proud to bring you a new exhibition by John Buckley! The exhibition is called “The Gardens of NW Washington, D.C.” Washington, D.C. is a beautiful city that rises from what once were the malarial swamps near the Potomac River up to the National Cathedral. John lives equidistant to two urban parks, both private property: the Bishops Garden of the National Cathedral, and Dumbarton Oaks, which sits at the top of Georgetown. They are very different places: the Bishops Garden is a small rose garden in the shadow of the National Cathedral where families come after church services, or on a quiet evening. It is a place for sitting in contemplation, or even to get your picture taken. Dumbarton Oaks is a private estate, built in the early part of the 20th Century, that today houses a research center run by Harvard, but its grounds are open to the public. It is filed with whimsical statues and multiple gardens, and on a hot day - and Washington is a very hot city in the summertime - it is one of the few cool places one can sit in peace. The exhibition is really an indirect focus on contrast. Around these photographs are millions of people and sprawling urban density however you cannot tell from the photographs and that is the intention. We are made to realize that if one is aware of the environment one lives in, one can find peace in the most unlikely of places. This is not just a comment on physical escape but also on mental relaxation and calmness. Our minds are inundated daily with countless messages, requests and demands but if we know ourselves, as John knows Washington, D.C., we can find inner peace in the turmoil and for a precious moment, like the butterfly, can be free.
