We are very very lucky to have right here in Austin, Texas a repository of 35mm prints collected under the banner of the American Genre Film Archive. Every month Terror Tuesday and Weird Wednesday borrow from this eclectic collection of prints, as do institutions around the country and around the world. And yet there are still stacks of cans and boxes of movies that nobody has borrowed, nobody has programmed in Austin, and about which most of the rest of the world has forgotten. Most of them never made it to home video or if they did it was in mutilated form or on long out-of-print VHS. To shine some light on these mysteries my colleagues and I do some light internet sleuthing, but the only way to make a true discovery is to pull the 35mm print out of the archive and put it in front of an audience who will either breathe life back into the movie or request that we store it away for another forty years. In 2014 we had a few small events that brought to light some real gems in the collection (well, one of them never actually played because it lost in an audience choice vote to a movie with the title The X-Ray Specs-Appeal of Professor Phinneas Q. Longjohnson. That movie turned out to not be so hot.). To share these discoveries with a wider audience, I decided to bring these movies back to the Ritz for an encore performance. If youre even a bit adventurous, curious, or open-minded, please come check out one or all of these! Theyre all very special in their own humble way, with big laughs, weird subcultures, and good old-fashioned exploitation fun times. Most of these arent on video (the one that is was made from the AGFA print!) in any way shape or form, so it goes without saying, these screenings are a rare opportunity. See you guys on Wednesdays! https://vimeo/113950713
