We beat the World again by a hefty margin……………. Corruption in India has reached an all-time high with rates being exactly double of the global prevalence. Globally 27% of the people surveyed, say they paid a bribe when accessing public services and institutions in the past 12 months. In India however, the number who did the same was 54% - over one in every two citizens. These are the findings of Transparency International’s Global Corruption Barometer 2013 – a survey of 1.14 Lakh people in 107 countries, released this Tuesday and reported by TOI, Ahmadabad edition on 10.07.2013. Political parties in India have been found to be the most corrupt institutions with corruption rates as high as 4.4 on a scale of 5 (1 being the least corrupt and 5 being the most corrupt). No wonder these parties, who otherwise are fighting like dogs, are unanimous on abusing the constitutional processes to keep themselves out of the ambit of RTI. Public Institutions entrusted to protect people are the worst suffer the worst levels of bribery. The highest amount of bribe was collected by Police (62%) followed by those involved in registry and permits (61%), educational institutions (48%) land services (38%) and judiciary (36%). Cynicism about a corruption-free future is wide-spread among the Indian public, with 45% people saying that they think don’t think the common man can make a difference. On the other hand around 34% people (1 in 3) said they wouldn’t report corruption while facing it (simply because the institutions responsible for controlling corruption are equally corrupt themselves, and also because they think that will be harassed even more if they reported). Indian people think that the democratic electoral process cannot be used effectively to weed out corrupt politicians because all parties are equally corrupt and an honest politician is a rare commodity. They also believe that these politicians use bureaucrats as their front as well as conduit for collecting bribes.
