We believe that design can make a difference! We participated in a Design and Ethics conference this week at Hanasaari, Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre. There was an excellent presentation by Swedish designer Johan Karlsson who is running a Refugee Housing Unit project, a two year long project with an ambition to design a better refugee shelter, driven by belief that every child deserves a safe place to call home. Ikea Foundation and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) will roll out one of the major innovations for war-torn homeless since the canvas tent: cheap, flat-packed, build-it-yourself homes with electricity-generating roofs.
