We bid a fond farewell to Larry Gonzalez, who recently decided to retire from his position as our organist. Larry has been playing church music for seventy years – the last fourteen of which were with our congregation. We all benefitted from his expertise and appreciated especially his ability in bringing us music from a wide variety of influences, especially from Spanish and Peruvian sources. When Larry met with the leadership of our congregation to discuss his desire to retire, he was adamant that he did want not a big send-off. “No cake, no party, no fuss, just put something in the newsletter after I’m gone,” he said. We’ve honored his wishes. Larry’s last Sunday with us was September 21. But we want to celebrate him here as well as in our newsletter. Larry was a remarkable musician, was extremely organized, was generous with his time, and was faithful to God in offering his musical gifts. He will certainly miss him! Larry has big plans for his retirement. He’s working on a book! Hymns, Alabranzes y Cantos Sagrados desde 1540 en Nuevo Mejiico (translation: “Hymns, Praises and Sacred Songs from 1540 in New Mexico”) will be a compilation of nearly five hundred years of the sacred music of the Southwest. What a bold undertaking - to preserve this important musical tradition! We wish Larry all the best in this project, and in this new phase in his life.
