We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” As we planned and prepared for the Bridesburg Elementary Supply Drive, we all shared a collective vision for the outcome of the event. But in all honesty, none of those fragmented dreams came close to the reality that played out on the schoolyard the evening of August 18th. I watched as people from different backgrounds and walks of life came together for one, common cause. I watched as people offered help and assistance to ensure the event ran smoothly. I watched as both people affected by the budget cuts and people with no connection to the school at all joined sides to fight a shared foe. In a world where it has become commonplace to shrug off the burden of another based on the principal that “it’s not my problem,” it was refreshing and invigorating to see the deluge of support that came through to make this event a complete success. By the end of the evening, the stage at Bridesburg Elementary was covered with a plethora of school supplies. And the generous donations of local residents and businesses help the School Advisory Council raise $3,400. We will never forget the humanity that helped make this event what it was. This is the Bridesburg that I know. A community not just of people but of power. This is not the first fight that Bridesburg has ever faced; and it’s surely not the last. But we will stand the test of time. We will because we have the WILL. Bridesburg Strong!
