We can learn a lot from a special education teacher: There are many things that I really like at ______________I love math, science, and reading nonfiction books. I am making positive choices in most of my classes, and even when I don’t like the work, I complete it anyway. In Social Studies, I am happy to be sitting in front of the room. Sometimes Social Studies is challenging. It feels like there are too many questions on the assignments. I will remember to chunk my work when this happens. Sometimes I don’t like the way my teacher communicates. For example, I don’t like when he tells me, “I bet it can wait” and I don’t like when he tells students to go to the hallway. No matter how hard I try to communicate my question, he still tells me to wait until later. When that happens I feel like being disrespectful or not doing my work. But this is not a good thing to do. Other people around me have the exact feelings at different times. Sometimes ____________feels frustrated, too. She has lots of students to teach, and she has the same feelings I do when they use mean words. When she feels this way she breathes deeply 3 times. Sometimes it helps her to get away from the situation. I know I am frustrated when I am breathing quickly or my body tenses up. It might feel like my brain is moving a million miles a minute. When I am frustrated, I am going to think of the beats on the computer. I will look at anything in the room other than the work or the teacher. I will inhale for 4 beats and exhale for 6. I will try this a few times. I can also find something to fidget with like my marble. If I decide I need space from Social Studies, I will check my schedule for a smiley to make sure ________ is in her room. I will take a five minute break when I need it. If ______________is not in her room, I will take my break in the _______________ I know that I am not in trouble. When I do this, I will feel so much better. It will make dealing with difficult classes or teachers a lot easier.
