We celebrate with member Seminary Andover Newton Theological School in their new Mission Statement. Here is their announcement. A New Era, a New Mission Andover Newton Theological School has adopted a new mission statement, the culmination of a process that began during the 2012-13 academic year and has included input from all corners of the school community. The new statement reads: “Deeply rooted in Christian faith, and radically open to what God is doing now, Andover Newton Theological School educates inspiring leaders for the 21st century.” The Andover Newton Faculty and Board of Trustees worked together on the mission statement over the course of two academic years. The process started with two short faculty writing projects, “one on where the School is, and one on where it needs to go,” said Dean of the Faculty Sarah B. Drummond, who coordinated collaboration between the faculty and board. In the same school year, the Board of Trustees had two joint meetings with the faculty, and surveys and focus groups were used to gather ideas from staff and students. Detecting that conversations were generating clarity and shared vision, Drummond pulled the faculty together over the summer of 2013 for further discussions on the School’s evolving identity. After analyzing all feedback gathered — hundreds of pages of notes and quotes — Drummond presented “a set of principles about the school’s mission, identity, and purpose,” which were then presented in summary form to faculty and the board in fall 2013. A small group comprised of trustee Sylvia Ferrell-Jones, Professor of Christian Bible Gregory Mobley, and President-Elect and board member the Rev. Martin Copenhaver then “moved those broad statements into a concise mission statement.” “Andover Newton’s faculty and board share governance of the School,” Drummond said. “Working together on the mission statement provided the two bodies an opportunity to develop common vision and language that strengthen their collaboration and therefore strengthen the School.”
