We continue our virtual tour of the Penns Common Historic District - TopicsExpress

We continue our virtual tour of the Penns Common Historic District and come to Number 1274 Hill Road at the corner of Clymer Street. the circa 1910 photo shows the original construction not long after being built towards the end of the 19th century. This building in addition to its rarity as a wood frame building in a city known for brick and stone construction, is also unique for its architectural style. Designed in the Stick Style and also referred by some as Eastlake Style, and noted by its use of exposed decorative vertical and cross member supports. This style took off on the West Coast with its abundance of timber and especially in California and San Fransisco at the end of the 19th century but was never as popular on the East Coast. Smaller examples of this style can also be found in several modest semi -detached homes on the 600 block of Church Street.
