We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training. Archilochus This great quote from the book, Martial Arts Wisdom, is especially important for martial artists and warriors. As we get older, it is very easy to start to learn on the skills that we have acquired in the past, and start to let our workouts slide a bit. Jobs, family, friends, lethargy, and injuries. can all start to cut into our training time, if we let them. And, if you do not stay on top of things, your skills will start to regress. The challenge, for the martial artists and warriors, is to see our skills realistically. When we stop working out as much, or as hard, we regress - period. But, as that happens, our minds still think that we have the same skills that we have always had, and that those skills will be there when we need them. This is deceptive thinking. For our skills to be there when we need them, we have to maintain them. Martial arts skills arent something that you achieve and then you have them for life; they are more along the lines of use them or lose them. Thus, you will not rise to your expectations, but will fall to the level of your training. See your skills honestly and maintain them as you would a fine sword. Maintain a high level of training, and bring the level of your training up to the level of your expectations.
