We excited about taking up the mantle for climate change and participating in a beach clean-up tomorrow as part of International Coastal Clean -Up day. Raising awareness about climate change is essential to protecting the ocean, because increased CO2 in the atmosphere causes the ocean to absorb too much CO2, causing organisms to die. Some interesting facts... Fact #1: Did you know that the largest rubbish dump is not on land, but in the ocean? The “Pacific Trash Vortex” is about 5 times the size of the Western Cape (700 000km). Fact #2: The ocean is the worlds’ largest carbon sink, storing more than 50 times the amount of carbon dioxide as the atmosphere. Increased carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are absorbed by the ocean and could be fatal for the ocean’s organisms. Fact #3: Climate change causes sea levels to rise, which will affect Cape Town’s coastal shoreline. This has detrimental effects on Cape Town tourism. How can you help?
