We frequently get asked about driving in a funeral procession. There is no state or federal law that obligates a funeral director to coordinate or lead a procession. It is a tradition. In the state of New Jersey, funeral processions are not exempt from New Jersey traffic laws. All New Jersey Motor Vehicle rules must be followed by the participants, and funeral firms accept no responsibility for the individual actions of those in the procession. This means that all vehicles within the funeral procession must stop at all stop signs and red traffic lights and use caution when proceeding through yellow traffic lights and yield signs, unless directed to do so by a police officer. Funeral participants should also not attempt to keep up with the other vehicles if doing so would require them to violate traffic laws. Also, in New Jersey, funeral procession cars should not be marked off with flags or placards, and state law prohibits the use of roof top/and or flashing lights. Please share this post for all to arrive safely while participating in a funeral procession in the state of New Jersey.
