We gave the African Union authority to interfere with internal Affairs of Member States - Africa is committed to Peace and Security - H.E Haile Mariam Desalegn, PM of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia and Chairperson of the African Union President Museveni is right now meeting President Omar El Bashir, President of the Republic of Sudan, on the margins of an Extraordinary session of the Assembly of the African Union working under the theme Africas Relationship with the International Criminal Court (ICC). He will in a shortwhile meet the President of Somalia. President Museveni was received at Bole International Airport by Ethiopias Minister for Minerals and Energy, Sinknesh Ejigu Delivering his opening statement during the opening ceremony this morning, PM Haile Mariam said the African Union was committed to ensuring peace and security in Africa. One of the far-reaching achievements we made in the transformation from the OAU to AU is democracy and the fight against impunity. We, therefore, gave the African Union authority to interfere in the affairs of member states.We are committed to democracy, peace and security on the African continent not to please anybody else but because this is what is right for our continent, he said. PM Haile Mariam said member countries were concerned about the manner in which African issues have been handled. 34 members of our organisation joined the ICC with the hope that we will get justice. But their manner of operation leaves a lot to be desired; the trend is very worrisome, he emphasized. The Prime Minister was pleased to note that President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy William Ruto had taken practical measures to reconcile communities and ensuring justice for post-election victims. He condemned the recent killing of innocent people in Nigeria and in Nairobi during the terror attack on the Kenyan city on the 3rd of October 2013. He also expressed sorrow over the death of over 300 Africans who drowned near Lampadusa Island.
