We had a creative writing assignment in my intro to game design course, with random suggestions from the class for characters, props, locations, and catch phrases which we then rolled dice to determine what we would write about. What you are about to read is my original story, Commander Shepard and the Ping Pong Tournament... OF DOOM! Commander Shepard reached up, wiping the sweat from his brow. The flurry of incoming projectiles was like nothing he had ever seen in his thirty seven years of military service. A bright, white flash flew past him, clipping his right year. GAME POINT, the referee announced. This was it, his last chance. The match was neck-in-neck, and the next point would win it all. He knew that the fate of the entire universe rested on his shoulders. He could not permit one more failure. He could not allow... them ...to win. If the Tamafo race took hold of the Ping Pong Paddle of Doom, then all would be lost. In their absolute blood-lust, their sole, driven purpose in life was the destruction and utter obliteration of all other forms of life. As his opponent, Deep Roy, smashed the ping pong ball, his keen attacks grew harder, better, faster, and stronger. The Commander began to wonder how the ping pong ball itself was holding its shape. Havent had enough yet? Deep Roy bellowed with another frightening lob. Were just getting started, he replied, Letsa go! Hundreds of fans surrounded them, filling the grocery store to its limit. All-in-all, thought Logan Hartline, CEO of Walmart Stores, Inc., stupidly, the promotion had been a huge success. This one promotion had seen an unprecedented boost in sales. As he watched the figures in his bank account steadily growing, the war for humanity waged on. Commander Shepard glanced up, stealing his eyes away from the match for only a moment, to where Hartline was standing. With disgust, he turned his focus back to the game. Was this really someone worth saving? Perhaps not, but Shepard was a man of honor, duty, and above all else, loyalty. He wouldnt do it for the Hartlines of the world. No, he would win the match for his family. He would win the match for his country. He would win the match so that the Tamafo threat could once and for all, finally be neutralized. The ball ignited in flame, it was finally beginning to break apart. The sweat from Shepards forehead dripped slowly into his eyes. Through the stinging, he forced his eyes to remain open. Thats when he saw it. Mustering every ounce of his strength, Commander Shepard thrust the tiny ball over the table, and past his opponent. The crowd around him exploded. If it had been a roar before, it was now a deafening barrage of sound. The fate of the universe had been decided. The day was won.
