We had a nice and long-lasting Indian Summer this year, but it will come to an end tomorrow. The forecast predicts snow for Sunday and for the temperature to fall to -13C by Sunday night. No matter how enjoyable the weather conditions it brings, First-Nations Summer does not have quite the ring as does the name to which we became accustomed in Canada. Unfortunately, the more ancient expression for it, Old Women Summer, even though far more logical on account of its references to the Parses or the Norns (because of the over-abundance of spider threads floating in the air that Indian Summer brings -- which was held to be evidence of the Norns doing their work, spinning the threads of life) is no longer politically correct because it offends the sensitivities of the ruling factions of political power, various orders of feminism. No matter how true, it is not politically correct to remind anyone of the extent to which the enormous power of women has been an all-pervasive fact of life all along, going back even to the beginnings of mythology. We are supposed not to notice and are supposed instead to buy in to the paradigm that women are poor, oppressed, underprivileged victims, legally minors who cannot be held responsible for their actions.
