We hate to be the ones to tell you this, but if youve never had an heirloom tomato then youve never tasted a real tomato. Heirlooms are not grown commercially any longer and are probably more than 50 years old. With tomato season just upon us - and dreams of yellow, red, pink and purple slices on our plates - we began to wonder what it was that made heirloom tomatoes so much better than the conventional ones you can buy at the shops any time of year. Lets cut right to the chase: Why are heirlooms better than industrially-grown or hybrid tomatoes? The answer is simple: The old ones tasted like a real tomato. What were growing today, would hardly classify as a real tomato. One thing is, you get all the subtle differences in heirlooms that you dont get in the other tomatoes. Your yellow heirloom tomatoes are milder. And your red heirlooms have a lot more acidic quality. And did you know that you get determinate and indeterminate tomatoes. Determinate tomatoes grow to a fixed size and tend to ripen in a short period and then fade away. Indeterminate vines, like our black cherries, keep growing and producing fruit for a few years. They can also be grown as a hanging vine, which is exactly what Farmer Mark is doing in the OZCF ECO Greenhouse. You should come and look.
