We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. Not everyone can afford to give financially, but your time in volunteering is just as important! Everyone has things they are passionate about, and I don’t expect anyone to be passionate about the things that I am. I do however want to share a few of my passions with all of you. 1) Cancer Research – My Mom is a 2 time survivor of breast cancer, cervical cancer and 2 time survivor of colon cancer, and I carry the genetic gene mutation BRCA2 which in essence means I have a 45% change of getting breast cancer as opposed to 12% of the general populations’ chances. a. My Niece is participating in the 3-Day this year, you can donate to support her effort here - the3day.org/site/TR?px=7472504&pg=personal&fr_id=1932&s_src=komenfacebook b. You could also purchase items from https://facebook/BittyBoosboutique where all of the proceeds are donated to Relay for Life c. Also, my Cousin Blake Thompson who lost his baby brother to childhood cancer participates in the Trek 100 event every year - maccfund.org/ 2) Heart Disease – if you look at my Family Tree you’ll see that a good portion of my Dad’s family (including Daddy) had some form of heart disease. I prefer to support the American Heart Association https://donatenow.heart.org/ 3) Veterans and Active Duty Service Men and Women – there are so many ways to help our veterans and service personnel. Check with your Local Red Cross to see how you can help - redcross.org/support/get-involved/holiday-mail-for-heroes 4) Homeless Pets – this one is near and dear to my heart. There are so many animals without homes and sitting in shelters scared and alone. We have to be their voices. From the puppy bought for Christmas that ended up being to much to handle, to the Cockatoo that screams a little to much, to that 13 year old lab that the owners would rather give up than to pay medical expenses. They all just want someone to love them. I have several different organizations that I support, but there are MANY others out there. a. https://facebook/TuggBullTerrier b. https://facebook/HeroDogGabe c. https://facebook/FriendsOfRowlettAnimals d. https://facebook/birdhaven 5) Girl Scouts –Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. It’s not about cookie sales! It’s about teaching Girls to be their own person while supporting their communities and gaining additional skills to be successful in life. More than anything we need Volunteers. People willing to be role models, support figures or even just able to teach the girls a life skill or fun project! There are also multiple ways you can donate: a. Girl Scouts of the USA (National) b. Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas (Council) c. Girl Scouts of Rowlett SU 147 (Our Town) d. Girl Scout Troop 9311 (Our Troop) Now, if you made it through all of that, I’m interested in knowing what are you passionate about? What causes tear at your heart strings?
