We have a parish High School, St. Michael’s Tech, which is bursting at the seams. Now in its 4th year, the freshman class this year doubled last year’s, because of the growing reputation but also because of the Government’s request that we not close enrollment to limit class size, but accept all who want to come. In return they promised to build us two new pavilions, each with 8 classrooms (four over four). The problem is that they haven’t built them yet, and we opened up the enrollment as they requested and now have more than 120 overflow students over in the parish center, jammed in tiny classrooms we use for children’s catechism, without desks and chairs (they don’t fit), working on tables build for little kids, etc. The rooms are crowded and hot. Yesterday we marched three miles to the regional education office to “demand” the classrooms they promised. Over 400 high school students blocking the streets, chanting. The press was out filming and interviewing. We’ll see if something happens.
