We have been getting many questions regarding Grade Level NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) Workshops, planned for 2014 - 2015. The Michigan Department of Education is planning to take action on the NGSS at their Board Meetings in November and December, of this year. Regardless, of the decisions that MDE takes, NGSS is a major topic in Science Education in our State and our nation. The NGSS articulate a vision for science learning and teaching which is of great value today. To prepare for the NGSS, Wayne RESA has scheduled a series of workshops, to be held at Wayne RESA. These are an extension to the workshops that we did in 2013-2014. They do not repeat last years professional development. The workshop dates are: October 22, 2014 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades K-2 October 27, 2014 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades 3-5 October 29, 2014 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades 9 - 12 November 3, 2014 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades 6-8 We will repeat these workshops in the winter and spring: March 2, 2015 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades K-2 March 18, 2015 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades 3-5 March 27, 2015 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades 6-8 April 24, 2015 - Preparing for the NGSS for Grades 9 - 12 During these workshops, we will focus in on: Sticking Points -- Major Questions Overview of the Standards Three Dimensional Learning -- Practices/Disciplinary Learning/Crosscutting Concepts Case Studies Resources for Teachers -- K-5 teachers will receive the book - Science for the Next Generation; 6-12 teachers will receive the book Translating the NGSS for Classroom Instruction.
