We have had a lot of calls today from people who unfortunately still do not have any power to their homes. If you (or a friend) have lost the power to your tank here are a few tips to keep your tank inhabitants as healthy as possible in the meantime. 1. Wrap a blanket around the tank to retain as much heat as possible. 2. Agitate the water surface regularly to allow oxygen exchange. We also sell solar powered oxygen pumps if needed in extreme situations. 3. Do not feed feed your fish while the power is off. 4. If using an external filter and the power is likely to be off for a prolonged amount of time (i.e. more than 24 hours), unplug the filter. This will prevent the filter from dumping the oxygen starved/dead bacteria from the filter into your tank when the power restarts. Clean the filter as normal and resume normal function as soon as the power comes back on. 5. When the power resumes normal service check ammonia and nitrite regularly as filter bacteria may have been lost and waste removal will be reduced until reestablished. Using API quick start or Seachem Stability will help during this time. If you need any further advice feel free to give us a call or message us and we will help as much as we can! :)
