We have ladybugs, lace wings and other good bugs in our veggie - TopicsExpress

We have ladybugs, lace wings and other good bugs in our veggie patch!!!! This is good as these are beneficial insects in that they are feeding on the pest insects e.g aphids and leaf eating caterpillars. If we used synthetic chemicals (pesticides) on our veggie patch we would be killing all these good insects (as well as the bad) and making the garden very toxic. But we arent......we dont put any chemicals on the veggies, which means the good bugs can build up enough in numbers to eventually control the bad pests. Having previously worked in agriculture I know what chemicals are applied to supermarket bound produce, and its not pretty. The demand for perfect produce by supermarkets & processing companies means farmers apply a concoction of toxic chemicals to manage pests and diseases. Produce wont be accepted if there is even a blemish or bite mark. Ive seen bin loads of broccoli rejected by major processors/supermarkets due to complaints of grubs or bite marks. Anything that grows above the ground in our summer and looks perfect, you can guarantee its had a plethora of chemicals applied to manage pests and diseases. Buy organic or grow your own. Its the safest option for Summer grown produce.
