We have no TV at home for the past 6 years now. And that means no Arnab Goswamis, no news, no dramas, and no supersingers! But I am a huge fan of Britain’s Got Talent, and an even bigger fan of Simon Cowell :) That show and its rags-to-riches stories give me a lot of positive energy, and I watch it especially when I feel a bit low on my professional front. This particular audition of Susan Boyle, an unemployed, 47-year-old aspiring singer, I have watched it more than 100 times now… And every time I watch it, I do it as if I am seeing it for the very first time. There are two huge take-aways for me from this particular video: 1. The way we discount ourselves – our potential, our skills, our knowledge. 2. And the way we judge others within a fraction of a second, sometimes by their names, the way they speak English and most of the times by the way they look. Today, I was having a personal conversation with a good friend of mine whom most of us in our group look up to as a leader, a chief. I was surprised when midway through our conversation he was discounting his own capability and looking down upon himself. And I realized I am not alone. If not all of us, most of us do that. We underestimate our potential. We underestimate what we are capable of achieving. We underestimate our skills. And we underestimate our knowledge. Ask yourself, “hey in what way am I discounting myself? What is the story that I have been telling myself that has convinced me to play small?” Stop discounting yourself. Take a minute to look at the story you have been telling yourself. If you don’t like it, change the story. Look at a mirror and look straight in the eyes of the person standing in front of you and say to that person, “hey, you are better than who you think you are.”
