We have paved over the most fertile land in our province and we are surprised at the result? Buy local as much as you can! Dont buy California strawberries when Ontario is in season. Buy from the local farmers market directly from the farmers. Ask where their farms are, if you dont know where that is ask what its near. Give yourself a geography lesson. Create relationships with the people who you are buying food from. Talk to them find out about their farms. How do they farm? Are they organic? Are they bio-diverse or are they conventional but really close to market? Are they greenhouse producers? I have all of these options at my local markets. By knowing how each farmer produces I am able to prioritize my purchases. I start at the most green options and move toward the least. Sometimes I never get there. Keep in mind that buying from any farmer make a difference. If you stopped buy from a large grocery store chain they wouldnt notice at all. When you purchase directly from the farmers it makes a difference. It helps to keep them afloat for at least one more year. In Ontario we are blessed with many options for farmers markets. Find the one closest to you! Make the effort and purchase as much of your grocery list from the market as you can.mylocalfarmers.ca/?gclid=CjkKEQjwodmdBRDm_ZLhorWm68UBEiQAKhO3_QGJpoYTG88rn-JsK4eXd5RWv1Rfih2srxpwWLL1TfTw_wcB This isnt perfect but it will help you locate the local markets in your area. Heres another tool that is more local. farmersmarketsontario/
