We have students who continued to study for the whole of year without funding and who had to pay off their student debt before they can register. We held discussions with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) to make additional funding available to address this problem. In our context of limited funds, students who perform poorly are most likely to be unfunded the following year. We are committed to raising more funds each year for loans and bursaries and to ensuring that this funding reaches the students for whom it is intended. We are willing to engage with students, student leadership and student organizations to explore ways in which we can co-operate to increase the pool of funds and ensure that student from poor and working class families have the chance to attend university or college.
