We join the nation in paying tribute to a modern day American political icon Mario Cuomo, who passed away yesterday in New York. He served as the first Italian American and the second longest serving Governor in the history of New York. His influence was national in scope. He was a founding Honorary Co-Chair of the IADLC. We worked with him closely, to help the next generation of Italian American Democrats across the country. Mario Cuomo was a man of principle, passion and purpose. He was unabashed in his beliefs especially in the important role of government in improving the lives of those less fortunate. He was the conscience of American progressive politics. His landmark 1984 speech to the Democratic National Convention seems prophetic today as his beloved Democratic Party grapples with its future as the voice for working families and the middle class. Click below to hear his speech. Mario Cuomo championed values which inspired millions. His voice may be now silent but his legacy will endure as long as there are economic and social disparities to address that warrant progressive policies. Our condolences go to the entire Cuomo family but especially Matilda and Governor Andrew Cuomo. Mario Cuomo wanted to be remembered as someone who tried. America as a nation and Italian Americans as a community are better because he tried. - Bob, Chair
