We know there are thousands of horses that ship to slaughter - TopicsExpress

We know there are thousands of horses that ship to slaughter across the Mexican border every day so it might sound crazy that we would put so much time and energy into saving one horse from that terrible fate. However, Chance is one of those that is grateful we did. He was hours from shipping from a feed lot in Bastrop, LA when we were able to get the Dept. of Ag. to put a hold on him and another gray mare that had been found abandoned in George County. They were given 30 days in case their owner showed up to claim them. They never did. The two grays had a large following on Facebook by that time so we asked if they could be spared. Chance was only 2 years old and still a stallion which is probably what saved his life. It’s a violation to ship stallions to slaughter unless they are petitioned off separately from the other horses which is impossible in the feed lot situation. Unfortunately the mare was shipped but Chance was returned to the Mize sale where we were able to pick him up. During the entire ordeal all we heard from everyone was how dangerous he was and that we really did not want him. He was just a baby! A 2 year old draft stud colt, frightened, not dangerous. :)
