We learned this in karate, because THERE we were equals. Granted the guys didnt pound on the women, but were told to hit her as hard as she hits you, just not harder. I was used in a belt test once to teach a young green belt that he needed to defend himself against anyone, even a woman. They told him to watch out, because I was good, to hit me as hard as I hit him(and I hit hard for a woman, just not trying to damage him), and watch out for my right hook. He learned a lesson the hard way...I hit as hard as I can take if we are swapping blows, but if you come up to me and strike me unprovoked...well, ask the guy who twisted my left breast in New Orleans how well his jaw healed...
