We live in unfortunate times where culture has become religion, and religion has become culture. How many times dont we hear this statement Dont do it, its not from our culture! ? And how many times do we hear Dont do it, coz its not part of our Deen, our religion ? Sad to say, but its true that culture/tradition have steadily replaced Deen/religion as a criterion in life. When a person wants to do something, he/she judges by the criterion of What will my family say about this? or What will my friends say? or WHAT WILL THE PEOPLE SAY? We have become very much concerned about what people will think about our actions and we have forgotten about What will Allah SWT say? What is the sunnah of Rasool SAW? When we look at the Western way of life, it is nothing but culture and tradition of people. It is a culture which arises from the false Aqeedah that God/religion have no role in managing of individual and societal affairs. Hence they set off on a path that limits religion to places of worship or certain rituals of prayer; and that is it! They do not want religion to interfere in the matters of their life. The Islamic Way of Life is in contradiction with this. It is based on the belief that Allah SWT, the creator has revealed to us a definite way of life, a system and set of rules for living in this world. The Islamic Way of life emanates from the Aqeedah of oneness of Allah SWT and the messengerhood of Rasool SAW. A Muslim should make this as the basis of his life i.e. Islam is a Deen, a complete way of life; it has a say in all aspects of individual and societal life; and that a Muslim is obliged to obey Allah SWT in each and every action that he takes, be it prayer, business, education, marriage, politics, etc. As Muslims, it is important for us to understand this difference that the criterion for action in our life is not culture or tradition, rather our criterion for action in life is our religion, our way of life i.e. Islam. Adoption of Islam as a way of life and not as a culture or tradition is the only solution for our life, and the only way we can expect to enter Allahs Jannah.
