We love to hear how our shelter babies are doing in their new homes. We recently received this wonderful note from our 90lb gentle giant Mooses adoptive family: It’s hard to put into words how thankful we are to have found Moose. Spotsylvania Animal Shelter was not on our radar because we live in Manassas. We had been looking for about a month and just couldn’t seem to find the companion we were looking for. After adopting a pit mix at the end of March we knew we had to bring another pit into our family. We started doing our research and talked to rescues and had a few meet and greets and began to wonder if we would find that special dog. Going back and forth between age and gender we just had no clue. On the 4th of July, BullyPaws – Pit-bull Patriots of Fredericksburg posted Urgent shelter dogs in need of a home. Moose was the first dog I laid my eyes on and I knew in my heart he would be ours. It took about 5 minutes of convincing and begging for my boyfriend to agree to make the lengthy drive to Spotsylvania. He was concerned I would not deal well with another failed meet and greet. On the morning of July 5th we drove out to the shelter and were rather overwhelmed by the number of animals in need. We walked into the first set of kennels and I feared I had made the wrong choice in visiting. My fears were quickly swept away. The wonderful staff/volunteers quickly united us with Moose and we were eager to see him interact with Thor. After an anticlimactic meeting we met the beautiful Delilah, though we would have loved to rescue both her and Moose. Moose spoke to our heart with his quiet nature and medical need. Unfamiliar with heartworm positive dogs the staff/volunteers were very diligent explaining the risks and treatment and even offered us vets that they had worked with in the past. Nothing was going to keep us from Moose. He and his new brother promptly jumped in the car and were ready to go. When Moose came home he was very reserved and quiet. Though he showered me with love and kisses at the shelter, getting home he was skeptical and unsure of why he was brought to this new place. Our first morning together Thor took on a role I did not expect. Moose was coughing quite vigorously and Thor began jumping on the couch to wake me up and let me know Moose needed help. Within three days Moose’s attitude changed he became playful and began snuggling with us. Moose is a typical older brother he likes to be the center of all excitement and follows on his daddy’s coattails everywhere. Thor and Moose surprised us. They are big active boys yet they tend to be very gentle with one another snuggling on the couch. When crated they talk to one another, it’s adorable. We couldn’t have been blessed with a better pair of rescues. Rebekah and Michael
