We may get heavy rain – but not right now Accorlding to forecasters, the rainfall outlook indicates that there is a likelihood of largely normal rainfall with a tendency to above normal rainfall. The second part of the season from January to March is expected to be largely normal with certain areas being below normal. The forecast is influenced by the warming and cooling of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean, North Western parts of the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. The cooling/warming of these oceans is known as La Nina/El Nino. La Nina is associated with wet conditions over the eastern parts of Southern Africa and El Nino has the opposite impact. Currently the ocean basins are warming up, which indicates an El Nino season. However the El Nino only contributes about 30% to the rainfall deficiency in Southern Africa. Meanwhile, there is virtually no grazing for cattle and other animals over a wide swathe of central and northern Botswana.
