We mean no offense to our Brothers and Sisters at the VFW, but apparently, Ms. Law has been drinking the Kool-Aid. To espouse that ...without the VFW, there would be no VA...no compensation, no benefits... is a complete falsehood and a statement designed solely to embolden the VFWs position as an arm of the VA. The VFW already receives MILLIONS each year directly from the VA. Something which many realize is a direct conflict of interest in the VFWs stated mission to ...ensure our veterans and military families are cared for after serving our country.” For those interested in a little history lesson; the beginnings of the VA go all the way back; ...to 1636, when the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony were at war with the Pequot Indians. The Pilgrims passed a law which stated that disabled soldiers would be supported by the colony. va.gov/about_va/vahistory.asp In spite of Ms. Laws belief that the VFW was instrumental in the creation of the VA, here is the snippet from the VFWs own website about their formation, (perhaps Ms. Law has not read it); ...some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000... Randi Law, a spokeswoman for the VFW, acknowledged it’s a common misperception that the organization is “working diligently to overcome.”.... “People are usually surprised to learn how much of an impact the VFW has already had on their lives,” Ms. Law said. “Without the VFW, there would be no VA. There would be no compensation, no benefits, no one to ensure our veterans and military families are cared for after serving our country.”
