We met up with my friend Gordens (who has been working with me all week) family. His daughter was on a school field trip to the Kaiping Villages. (I must have said Hi, how are you?, What is your name? 100 times with the kids that wanted to practice English :). The villages are a UNESCO world heritage site. Very interesting history- Chinese that left and immigrated to South East Asia or the US during the Gold Rush/Rail Road building in the 1800s Many returned very wealthy and built these villages with a Western/European flair. Because of the villages wealth they were constantly attacked, so each home is multilevel and fortified. Each village has watchtowers surrounding it. There are about 1500 of these family homes still left standing.
