We must agree that the plight of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters worldwide is appalling especially on the African continent. It pains me that the attitude of ignorance and hatred of African leaders and citizens alike towards the disenfranchised among them is causing the moniker of Dark Continent to be a fitting one. As an gay black man of the Diaspora, Im ashamed of the climate of hate, bigotry, prejudice and the consequences that come with these attitudes, are having on members of the LGBTQ community worldwide and more specifically in Africa. Im well aware of the role that religion has played in this turmoil, however there seems to be an alarming resurgence of archaic behavioral patterns when dealing with anything seemingly different or misunderstood as taboo; therefore the necessity for eradication or other drastic measures. Until, as a part of humanity, we learn to respect each others differences as we embrace our similarities, the specter of violence will continue to rear its ugly head. Until we realize that every person has equal rights to life, love and all creation there will never be peace on Earth. WTW 4.22.2014
